Risks of Online Patches

This is not yet an informational thread. I made this thread so I could gather information about the risks of downloading the necassary patches for online play. I am doing this because A lot of things I care about are on my computer. I've gone to many place with flags popping up saying
"My computer won't work after I downloaded this." Or "My JJ2 game crashes every time I try to play!"

I wish to know what precautions to take when downloading patches and how to get my 1.24 version of
JJ2 online.

Any information is appreciated.

As a person who understands how the patches work I just consider what I need, since many of the patches are just extra things like letting jj2 use extra ram or ect.

Well many patches (if not all) on J2O should be trustworthy. You're more likely to get affected by a virus from your email than a patch from J2O. If someone uploaded a bad program to J2O, it would get detected rather quickly, considering the number of people using the downloads. J2O isn't the only place to get a patch for jj2 tho.

There are many types of game patches available (registry patches, game executable patches, full mods, etc). I make executable patches myself and I always provide an option to make backups so that users may later restore the original executable, if something goes wrong. My suggestion is to check a couple of things to decide if a patch is trustworthy - the patch author and popularity of the patch itself.

You don't really need any patches for online play (except the official 1.20 to 1.23 maybe). Most of the patches are designed to enhance the gameplay or remove various game bugs. Although rare, there were cases in the past where a program would try to destroy jj2 or worse the operating system itself. These programs are mostly made by inexperienced individual programmers, who want to have some sort of revenge on another person. The programs then ended up affecting multiple users. If you're concerned that a program might do something bad to your PC, you can always consult users on this forum, or better even try the #jj2 channel on quakenet.

I think I trust too much in the good willing of others, so yes, I do not consider anything before downloading any patches.

.."patches"?
there is only the 1.23 patch (well there used to be more patches but you shouldn't care about their existance) and this is the only one you'd HAVE TO get in order to play online.

i'd like to note that the "Download Patches" page in j2o is outdated (Mike said he'd update it sometime)
all files you really need nowadays are the 1.23 patch, Carrotade (server-side only), Seek Hole Fix (which you'd probably have to run along with JJ2) and perhaps Project Controller (just for modifying your server settings when necessary).

oh, and stop being a paranoid android.

that's all, glad to be helpful.

I have the 1.24, the TSF, so I don't need patches, it works well without any.

It seem JCF administration got a move on since my name got "finally" changed. But hey thanks guys out there.

Making kind of a tribute to Foo races + research on the subject... (It's going better now that we have finally foo races uploaded ==> HERE.)
Progress: ▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄ 10% or so...
And also randomly here and there hosting the original Team Foo races!

I installed the CRC bypass patch that came with Jazz Sprite Dynamite. That was the only patch I ever applied to my 1.24. And the list server patch but even that is no longer required. And it modifies your registry not your jazz2.exe.

It doesn't check CRC, it just checks the filesize.

Well thank you birdie for ruining my reply. Here's my point:

The only danger of downloading online patches is if they're uploaded by me or Pyramid

Or my "anti-crash" patch. Just email your local viral test center and ask them for it.
