What happened the first few times you played Jazz?
The first time I ever played, about 4 years ago, I didn't know about the list server patch. Instead, I read on my JJ2 box to go to www.won.net
After going to the JJ2 section of Won.net, I clicked a game called "Oldbies Only" When I got there, an "ICEM@N" was hosting a level I have not seen in many years. It used the freeze music file, and was very linear and used a "star wars" background I think. Anyway, IceWing and Bartman were there, too, and IceWing screamed, "HACKER!! BAN 5!!!" Not knowing I had joined a passworded server, I was confused. Later, IceWing told me what I had done. He gave me a list patch link. (Jazz2City) That evening, I played a hotel which I liked back then and haven't seen in years called "The A5 hotel." -My |

Well, the first few times I played jazz2online were on the demo - Diamondus Warzone CTF. A guy whose name I still cannot remember up to know.. (it was J something X.. Jax? Jex? Jix? Jox? Jux? Maybe Jex.. or Jax.. Honestly I don't know.)
And so this J-person taught me the very quickest way to capture the flag in about 10 seconds with spaz. Good times. Another (possibly) memorable moment. Wakeman of J2stuff had hosted a server called titanic. (this was the first and last time I ever saw Wakeman in a server) An underwater ship level using the electric tileset which has the floating eyeballs in single player? Dunno the name. Anyway, there was a secret spot you could get to with spaz only. Crazyrabbit and I were battling for that secret spot. Soon we got fed up with the other people and went and made a private server. Good times..

I joined a server using the third Treasure Hunt level, my least favorite multiplayer level by far. I was disgusted and left for a few years.

The first time I played JJ2 online, was when I bought JJ2 from GamePro (the magazine has (or had) a store back in 2000 when I bought Jazz2 from them, brand new for 10 dollars *SCORE!*).
I thought that if I bought the full version the servers would actually work, but they didn't so I had to use WON.net (who no longer support JJ2). The first level I saw was a halloween level (with an awesome red moon in the sky. It was a professinal graphic, but the rest of the tileset was less so). There was houses that you can go into and grab candy, and on the far right of the level was a graveyard. Also, I saw some wierd stuff on my first day, like a player was hallf Jazz/half frog, and frozen like they were timing out. In all, it was so awesome. ![]() ![]() |

As for JJ1, I saw it shareware in a store, but with the butt ugly looking Jazz on the cover, I was a bit skeptical, however, having few choices that I haven't tried yet, I bought it not expecting much, but, nope, one of the best Shareware games I had. Bought it around 1996.
Look at this image? Isn't it so butt ugly you wouldn't touch it with a 10 foot pole? But it is a classic! http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...category=11047 The animation at the start really surprised me, too. |

I played the first day because my friend had received a copy and had always wanted to play a game on its launch date to find out what it was like. It was about 11 PM by the time he got his firewall configured properly, and by that time I really did not want to play all that much. We joined a server as splitscreen, played for about five mintues, and then I went to sleep. Yay.

I remember I first went into a server that was hosting battle1 and of course I didn't have a clue how to speak. I remember bashing the keyboard and finally getting a text prompt but I didn't know which key had actually done that so I bashed the keyboard in order to type for about 5 minutes before I figured out that "t" would do it. Good times.

It actually took me several weeks to figure out how to type, embarrasingly. I thought it just happened occasionally, and the game granted you a right to speak or something. Then, I realized a key did it, but never took much time to figure out which one. I just mashed the keyboard until I hit it. Eventually, someone figured out my predicament and told me. Good times, indeed.

I remember joining a Diamondus Warzone server and getting relentlessly pwned by Merlin. Very good times. I think I played DW for three hours every day for a month.

Tch, judging from the time it took you guys to learn how to type I'd guess Jazz2 was probably your first game ever.
![]() First time I played online...it was on my very bad 56K modem, and I was talking to Onag on ICQ. The listserver patch'd just come out I believe, so he hosted a game in one of his levels (Shivering Showdown...still a classic) and I came along. There were lots of people there, notably ET. Good times. |

Jazz 2 shareware was the first game I played online. It took me awhile to find out how to get online but when I did, i was a little shaky, knowing that all those people were actually other people. I was a little p#ssy then, haha. When I got Jazz 2, I played usually as 'HazardDAWG' (i know it is an extremely gay name), I made some levels like this called hotel maddness I think the name was. I used that metal tileset, and it was a maze at the start and then there was a hotel. Then I made this space ship level that lots of people liked. At the top of the level was this big ship and at the bottom was supposed to be the planet. It was a huge level. Then I made this other level that used a duke nukem tile set. IT was Cops and Robbers, where cops spawned in the left spot and the robbers in the right. I also made this really sh!tty banner for Jazz2City and sent it in. He actually posted it in the news. The background was a still from lego island (don't ask) and I wrote Jazz2City on it haha. If anyone reconizes any of this, tell haha.

Once I remember as I was beating everyone in a battle game (I was a client and the level used Beach tileset) and winning the game. Bobby was also in the server.
But when the game ended the level switched to a new one using one of the Mez tilesets. It also used ambient lightning to make the level very dark however I did not know how to turn it off. I remember Bobby roasting me in that level in narrow passages over and over again as he was shooting powered bouncies behind when I was chasing him. Pretty tricky and deadly for a newbie, huh? I didn't haver any powerups either ![]() But the very first time I played online was in a Diamondus Warzone CTF. I don't remember much except that there were many ppl in the server and that I liked it. What else? Ow yea! I remember Black Ninja cheating online using lots of powered ammo tho there were no powerups in the level. I didn't know how to cheat at that time. But what I really hated were the hotels and I still hate them today because they steal a lot of players. More, more and more...

My first games were full of blissful ignorance. It took me weeks to find out how to chat, thought Battle1 was the only level that was being hosted, had no idea why everyone started yelling when i used the shield and actually thought people were cheating or messing up the game intentionally when the CTF bug occurred in DW. Fun fun... ;-P

I don't really remember, it was 5 years ago. Late in the year, anyway I guess I first met people like Xeno, ShadowGPW, JJ Sysop, etc... I learned how to chat and joined my first clan: JJ. Btw, I forgot the person's real name. But Icewing is not so and so's original name used on Jazz2.

Well, firstly the language on my computer kept altering each time I pressed the alt button, though I didnt know that at first. When I was typing in my nickname I accidentally pressed Alt and couldn't type letters because jazz2 wont take letters from other lagnuages, so my nickname was "2". I joined a server using the jungle tileset, and it was one big box with people killing each other. I remember seeing Sal and spoy. Spoy said "who is 2?" and Sal said "Me ;P". I didn't know how to chat back then, and quickly found out by surfing the web for sites that explained how.

My first day on multiplayer, my Internet had a mean firewall and I timed out every time I joined a server. I got to play for a happy 30 seconds though, and talk to people each time.
Than, a long time later, I got a new computer. I joined a server... Hooray! It was a big ol' DM reunion. I remember Dizzy was there, and I thought Dizzy was Bobby's actually name, so I kept referring to him as a her. I think I remember EvilMike being there... There were a whole bunch of DM guys! And what do you know-- I was pwning them. Anyway, after I stopped playing after about 3 days of JJ2 Online, I came back, and found myself being pwned by DM again. So for some reason, at a time when I should've sucked like a n00bshop (which I was), I was pwning people in DM. Weeeeird.
